Hope Gangloff, artist friends, essential tremor, and my lunch with Kindle

Last week, thanks to my friend Marta Szabo, I *discovered* Hope Gangloff, an American painter who lives and works in New York City.

It was love at first sight.

As part of my ongoing series “ART du jour” on Facebook, I posted several of her paintings and my friend Nancy McBride was immediately captivated by Gangloff’s style.

When I posted the following piece on Monday, June 24…

“Serious Snack”
Hope Gangloff — 2011
acrylic on canvas, 36 x 48 inches

… Nancy commented about how she loved “the implied texture/depth, yet done with line and lack of shadow.”

She also challenged me to do a line drawing.

Now ever since the Essential Tremor in my hands got worse at the end of 2014, I’ve almost totally abandoned drawing. I don’t tremble that much, but it’s enough to annoy me. Then there’s this health problem I’ve been dealing with since 2011 — which is now 80% cured, YESSS —, so I guess that along the way, I’d lost my mojo.

Nancy’s challenge was shaking my cage.
Oh no.

The thing is, I was perfectly fine living in my comfortable lazy rut, sharing other people’s art, thinking about drawing now and then but never taking action on account of my “condition.”

All good.

As I was about to refuse the challenge,
Nancy posted her drawing.

And then she posted this second one…

“Whimsical tedium” — Nancy McBride

… and that’s when I jumped in!

I didn’t follow the “line drawing” style.
I just drew.

It was 12:30 pm when Nancy challenged me.
At 8:06 pm, I posted my drawing:

“PHASE 1”

Yesterday, I shared the finished product:

“Lunch with my friend Kindle”
Black ink & Prismacolor pencils on cardboard
9.5 x 7.5 inches

In tomorrow’s blog post, I’ll show you what I did with my drawing. Until then, don’t forget to visit my artist friends:

FLOW photo challenge — day 29: colour of the day

Posted in creativity

I went for a walk by the river, this afternoon, to see if I could get a good picture for this last day of the challenge. It was COLD and the bitter wind was merciless, but I ended up taking 40 photos before my fingers went numb. Here are my 3 favourite ones:

Here, I felt peaceful… happy to be ALIVE.

Here, I laughed.
Sign says, “Swim at your own risk.”
No thanks!

Here, I realized how quickly…
within a few seconds…
things can change.

And speaking of change, tomorrow is the first day of March — YESSS. I’m looking forward to spring… to new life… to more creative challenges that will help me break out of my shell.
